David discusses Africa with Ambassador
Don Yamamoto, the senior career diplomat in the Bureau of African Affairs, U.S. State Department.
David has extensive experience across African continent.
David Young once ventured into the middle of Lake Victoria to accompany a U.S. Congressman inspecting four tiny islands. Desite their rocky terrain, the owner wanted to create a luxury golf course. Though infeasible, the experience pointed out early on to DNY that Africans had good ideas and big dreams.
David with Zambian Princess Gladys Mulemena. David sponsored a trip to the United States to assist her efforts in opening new markets for small Zambian and Congoelse miners.
In recent years, the promise of Africa has attracted a significant portion of DNY Assocites time and investment. As a result, grroundbreaking milestones have been achieved and DNY's footprint is now significant across the continent.
Despite horrific economic conditions, seemingly incessant poverty and a remarkable lack of infrastructure, experts always manage to find a way to point to Africa's future in a positive way
And why not, incredible oil finds in recent years, some announced, some not yet announced, add to Africa's more obvious mineral riches.
Yet, the challenges of governance and a complete lack of infrastructure are huge obstacles that somehow must be overcome if Africa is to ever emerge from its own economic quagmire.
Nevertheless, the rich mineral wealth of Africa onshore, coupled with astounding offshore oil and gas finds offshore, give rise to the speculation that indeed, Africa is the final investment frontier.
Since the passage of the African Growth and Opportunity Act by the U.S. Congress, America's trade with Africa has exploded. But so has Africa's trade with China and Russia and the race to the resources seems to be underway.
DNY Associates has significant resources, experience and associates across the African continent. In addition to trade activity, Global has worked and is currently consulting with a number of African governments and officials.
To be sure, Africa has seen its share of questionable business practices. However, with the actions of banks and investment officials being called into question around the world, Africa somehow again is emerging from the economic fog as a potential investment. It's agriculture sector is booming.
Ironically, its lack of development in many ways has shielded the continent from being saddled with the woes now befalling other governments. Africa has its own debt crisis, of an entirely different making, but debt relief efforts and initiatives like AGOA and the Millenium Challenge are creating a trickle of economic headwinds across the sub-sarahan plain.
